The Bundesliga play-out is a two-leg relegation playoff between the teams that finish in the 16th and 17th positions in the Bundesliga and the third-placed team from the second division. The winner of the play-out takes up a place in the Bundesliga the following season, while the loser is relegated to the second division. The play-out is usually played in May, shortly after the end of the regular season. The away goals rule is applied in the play-out, meaning that if the scores are level after both legs, the team that has scored more away goals is declared the winner. If the away goals rule does not produce a winner, the play-out goes to extra time and penalties if necessary.
